Introduction to negation

Negative statements are the opposite of affirmative statements. In English, there are several ways to create negative statements.

affirmative negative
She is hungry. She is not hungry.
I have friends at work. I have no friends at work.
There are some over there. There are none over there.
Tom always walks to school. Tom never walks to school.
Somebody is here. Nobody is here.
Something happened. Nothing happened.
Both parents have arrived. Neither parent has arrived.
Tom and Sue have left. Neither Tom nor Sue has left.
We’re happy and pleased. We’re unhappy and displeased.
