Preguntas sí / no

En inglés hay dos tipos de preguntas básicas: preguntas de sí o no (Yes / No questions) y preguntas informativas (wh- questions).

Las preguntas de sí o no se llaman tambien preguntas cerradas, porque hay solamente dos respuestas posibiles: sí y no. Al formar una pregunta de sí o no, tiene que usar uno des estos verbos: BE, HAVE, DO, o un verbo modal. Es imposible de formar una pregunta de sí o no sin uno de estos verbos.

Use el verbo BE para preguntar sobre la identidad, la descripción o la ubicación de algo o alguién. Fíjese que las respuestas pueden ser cortas o largas. Por ejemplo para la pregunta Is this a book? (¿Es un libro?) la respusta puede ser de tres formas: Yes. / Yes, it is. / Yes, it is a book.

Use el verbo BE con una preposición para hacer preguntas sobre la ubicación de una persona o un lugar. Pueden ser en el presente o el pasado.

¿Las llaves están bajo los libros?
No. / No, they are not.
Was his house on an island?
¿Su casa estaba en una isla?

¿Las manifestaciones eran en el centro?
No. / No, they weren’t.

Use BE para hacer preguntas sobre actividades o situaciones que pasan ahora o que pasarán en el futuro. Este uso del verbo BE es el presente progresivo: BE + participio presente.

Para hacer preguntas de sí o no en el pasado, use el pasado simple del verbo BE con un participio presente o lo que se llama el pasado progresivo.

Use el verbo BE hacer preguntas con la voz pasiva.

¿El libro fue leído?

Use el verbo HAVE para preguntar si una acción ha ocurrido o si alguién ha hecho algo. Fíjese que el verbo auxiliar HAVE es en el presente. En inglés, esta structura gramatical compuesta se llama el present perfect.

Use el verbo DO para obtenir datos de personas, lugares o cosas.

Use los verbos modales para preguntar sobre posibilidades o incertidumbres.

Recuerda: Al formar una pregunta con DO o un verbo modal, el verbo principal queda en la forma base (sin to).

No obstante, si hay dos verbos que siguen DO, el segundo verbo queda en el infinitivo (con to).

Fíjese que hay varias maneras de contestar a una pregunta de sí o no, especialemente al usar las contracciones.

No, he’s not busy.
