Adverbios negativos

Adverbios negativos se usan para formar frases negativas. En inglés, los adverbios negativos son no, not, never y nowhere. En inglés, la mayoría de las frases negativas se forman con el adverbio not.

No se usa mucho para contestar preguntas cerradas (Yes / No questions) en el negativo.

Are you Canadian?   No.   ¿Eres canadiense?
Have they left? No. ¿Han salido?
Does she smoke? No. ¿Fuma?

Para contestar con una frase completa, hay que utilizar not.

Are you Canadian?   No, I am not Canadian.   No, no soy canadiense.
Have they left? No, they have not left. No, no han salido.
Does she smoke? No, she doesn’t smoke. No, no fuma.

Con el verbo BE, el adverbio not está colocado después del verbo.

They are tired.   They are not tired.
  No están cansados.
 
She was here.   She was not here.
  Ella no estaba aquí.
 
We were thirsty.   We were not thirsty.
  No tuvimos sed.

Por las frases formadas con un verbo auxiliar, por ejemplo HAVE o un verbo modal, el adverbio not se coloca entre el verbo auxiliar y el verbo principal.

Para formar frases negativas con todos los otros verbos y el adverbio not, el uso del verbo auxiliar DO es obligatorio. Vea le lección sobre la negación y el verbo DO para aprender más sobre este verbo esencial.

Never quiere decir nunca. Never siempre está colocado despues del verbo BE y los verbos auxiliares.

I am never lost.   Nunca estoy perdido.
He is never home. Nunca está en casa.
They were never late. Nunca tardaron.

They are never returning.   Nunca volverán.
I have never been to Paris. Nunca he ido a Paris.
We may never see you again. Puede ser que no nos vemos más.

Por todos los otros verbos, never se coloca en frente del verbo.

We never talk to him   Nunca hablamos con él.
It never rains in January. Nunca llueve en enero.
Tom never spoke to her. Tom nunca habló con ella.

Nowhere quiere decir ningún lugar. Nowhere está colocado después del verbo.

This road goes nowhere.   Esta ruta no llega a ninguna parte.
I went nowhere yesterday. No fui a ningún lugar ayer.
Tom has nowhere to go. Tom no tiene donde irse.
